Jack was full of energy and (A)________. He built a house and a barn and a blacksmith shop. He was a good carpenter and clever with his hands, but he never made any money. He built a machine for (B)________ wells, and he found water on other men’s land but not on his. And he invented another machine that harvested other farmers’ wheat. Other men took Jack’s ideas and made money from them, but he never did.

Men came from all over the Valley to his blacksmith shop. He (C)________ their tools and replaced their horseshoes, but he was not a businessman. His customers promised to pay him after the harvest, then after Christmas. Then they forgot and he did not know how to (D)________ them.

Men also came to his blacksmith shop just to visit Jack. They loved to listen to his rich, deep voice as he talked about the world outside the Valley. He had a good gift (E)________ telling stories, and there were always three or four men standing (F)________ him as he hammered.

We had a heavenly day yesterday. We went to Stratford-on-Avon, the place where Shakespeare was born and died. Stratford is a very (B) ________ town, right in the centre of England. You can’t get very far from the sea anywhere in England, but Stratford is about the farthest point you can get from it. The first place we went to was Shakespeare’s birthplace, a small house with small rooms in the centre of Stratford. We saw the very room where Shakespeare was born. Lots of people who had visited the house had written their names on the walls. It seemed a wrong thing to do – although (F) ________ the names were Walter Scott, Dickens, Thackeray and Browning. But one of the things I liked best was the garden behind the house, because in it are growing all the flowers, trees and plants that are (G) ________ in Shakespeare’s plays.

The hook at the side was stuck. Pat opened it with his knife and the whole house front swung back, and – there you were, looking at one and the same moment into the sitting room and dining room, the kitchen and two bedrooms. That is – isn’t it – what you want to know about a house when you come to the door!

The best thing in the house was the lamp that stood in the middle of the diningroom table. The lamp was perfect. The lamp was real.

Uncle Will arrived at Kent at 5 p.m. ”What’s wrong with your father, Bess? Will asked after (A)________ her with an affectionate embrace. Bess was his favorite niece and he came as quickly as he could after her call. She sounded desperate. Stepping back, Will peered into her face. It was pale and filled with (B)________.

“What happened?” Uncle Will placed his hand on Bessy’s.

As they walked across the entrance foyer of Waverley Court, heading toward the staircase, Bess went (E)________, “I think you know that my mother went to Rome for Easter. I was a chemist at the Amos Cosmetics factory in New Jersey, USA, trying to design a new perfume when it happened. I never thought I would discover something quite so amazing by (A)________. Not me. I was only 23 and it was my second year at the factory. I liked my job very much but I was not a lucky person. I had come straight from the university then, but now I was a chemist in one of the biggest factories in New Jersey. It was an important position to have and meant lots of work.

It was my boss, David Amos. He happened to be walking past where I worked. I couldn’t (G)________ being nervous. He was fairly sure of his good looks and never spoke to ordinary-looking girls like me. I was thrilled.
