  1. What should you remember to stay safe using the Metro?
  2. Which is the longest Metro train route?
  3. When did the Moscow Metro start working?
  4. What are the advantages of the Metro compared to other means of transport?
  5. How fast does the Metro system grow?
  6. What are the inconveniences of using the Metro?
  7. What materials were used to decorate the Metro stations?

A. The idea of an efficient transportation system in Moscow dates back to the time of Russian Empire. However, it was not developed into a construction plan due to World War I and the Civil War. The government of the Soviet Union got back to the idea in the 1920s, and in 1935 the Moscow Metro accepted its first passengers. The opening ceremony took place on May 15th, at 7am. The city celebrated the event with parades, concerts and performances.

B. The population of Moscow is around 12 million people. There are also a lot of people who come to the capital on business, excursions or to change plane or train, as Moscow is the main transportation centre. If there was no underground transport, it would be impossible to avoid a traffic standstill in the city. In fact, the Metro is very punctual. There are no traffic jams underground and, when taking the Metro, the passengers save time and nerves.

C. Lots of the city passengers prefer the Metro to cars and buses in spite of some discomfort caused by too many people. The problem is that the stations, the passages between them, and the railway cars get really overcrowded in rush hours. Sometimes there are lines to enter the Metro, though, fortunately, the waiting time is quite short.

D. When you travel on the Moscow Metro, long magnificent staircases get you downstairs and upstairs. They run fast and you need to be really careful to step on and off them in time. To avoid accidents, never cross the waiting line at the station until the coming train stops completely. Remember that you should never lean on the doors of the railway cars when the car is in motion – it can be really dangerous.

E. Apart from being an efficient means of transport, the Moscow Metro is a very ambitious architectural and art project. The stations look radiant and brilliant due to marble, bronze, steel, milk glass and other luxurious interior materials. The best architects, such as L. Polyakov, K. Ruzhkov, A. Medvedev and others, worked on it. The chief lighting engineer was Abram Damsky, who cleverly used the light to highlight the beauty of the stations.

F. The first line of the Moscow Metro was 11 km long and included 13 stations. Now there more than 230 stations, most of which are underground, but there are also surface-level and elevated stations. The project that is currently in progress suggests that about 150 km of new lines are to be opened within ten years, between 2012 and 2022.

Определите, в каком из текстов A–F содержатся ответы на интересующие Вас вопросы 1–7. Один из вопросов останется без ответа.
  1. What cultural and media subjects took the name of Gorky Park?
  2. At what time is Gorky Park open to the public?
  3. How can you get to Gorky Park by public transport?
  4. What kind of films can you see in the open-air cinema in Gorky Park?
  5. What entertainment does Gorky Park offer in the cold season?
  6. What kinds of animals can you see in Gorky Park?
  7. Why is Gorky Park a great place to be active?

A. Gorky Park, officially named Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure, is a very popular place with the residents and guests of Moscow. It covers about 250 hectares and stretches along the bank of the Moskva River. The huge park is actually very close to the centre of the busy city – it is between Garden Ring and Third Ring Road and you can easily get there by bus or by Metro. The nearest Metro metro station is Park Kultury, and there are a few more stations within walking distance.

B. Gorky Park was the first amusement park created in the Soviet Union. It was opened in 1928 and became a model for lots of other parks set up across the country. In 2011, Gorky Park had major reconstruction and the amusement rides were removed. The place turned into an eco-friendly zone which works non-stop and is accessible round-the-clock, day and night, seven days a week. There is no entrance fee.

C. Gorky Park is a large recreational zone in a megapolis which gives its people an opportunity to relax and entertain in the open air. However, not all the seasons in Russia are warm enough for outdoor activities. Does this mean that in winter Gorky Park turns into a deserted place? Of course not! Gorky Park turns into a huge skating rink where people skate along the alleys, beautifully decorated with colourful lights.

D. You may be surprised to find a club for young naturalists in Gorky Park but it is really there and it is called Green School. Parents think it is a very good idea as city children do not have lots of opportunities to watch animals. On the territory of Green School they can see rabbits, parrots, turtles and other animals. Apart from that mini-zoo, children are welcomed to the garden, greenhouse, woodwork shop and library.

E. A quarter of a million people visit Gorky Park at weekends, which is a convincing indication of its popularity. There you can see students getting ready for their tests on the green grass, people practicing yoga and those taking dancing or drawing lessons in the open air. The spacious park provides lanes for jogging, table tennis equipment and football and volleyball pitches. You can also hire a bike or take part in the numerous workshops.

F. Probably, there’s no person in Russia who has never heard of Gorky Park. Due to its popularity, it has been the setting for a number of films. The park was described in the novel Gorky Park by Martin Smith, which was later made into a film with the same name. The famous single Wind of Change by the rock band Scorpions refers to Gorky Park in the early 1990s. And, of course, Gorky Park, the Russian hard rock band that named itself after the park, contributed to the atmosphere of the place.

In other words, the people of the city can spend their free time in a pleasant, exciting, meaningful, and useful way. They can choose from a wide range of various activities – they can visit a theatre or an exhibition, go to a sports centre, disco, concert, club whatever. There are a lot of places suitable for children where they can learn something new in an interesting and entertaining way.

B. A cold and snowy day, with low temperatures that make the air feel freezing, is not a reason to stay at home. One of the places Moscow residents enjoy visiting at weekends and during the long New Year holidays is the skating rink. There are many outdoor skating rinks. They are beautifully lit and decorated, with music and small cafés where the skaters can have some hot tea and snacks. Not only children and young people come to the skating rink – you can also see a lot of middle-aged and senior people who love skating.

C. It’s not easy to stay healthy and fit in a megalopolis. Fortunately, in Moscow, there are many recreational zones. Apart from the cycle lanes, and places for jogging and exercising in the parks, people can attend numerous sports centres, gyms, and swimming pools, which are conveniently located within most residential areas. Many schools and kindergartens can boast well-equipped sports grounds, indoor gyms and even swimming pools.

D. Moscow schools are remarkable due to the facilities they offer their students, but that is not all. In Moscow, school children have unique opportunities to learn history in the best historical museums and astronomy in a modern planetarium. There are many excursions, lectures, quests, and masterclasses, specially designed for curious young people. The children feel involved and are glad to take part in the activities not only during the school time but at weekends and during holidays too.

E. Moscow is famous for its parks and gardens. The green areas are necessary for people's well-being, and the residents of the megalopolis appreciate the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of flowers and trees. Some parks, like Tsaritsyno, Sokolniki, and Kolomenskoe are really huge. By walking there, one can totally escape the noise of the city. There are also relatively small but charming gardens, like Neskuchny Garden where children and adults can watch the squirrels and feed the birds.

F. On weekdays and at weekends, the centre of Moscow is always crowded. Not only the locals, but also most visitors, have a very busy programme too – there is so much to see and do in Moscow! Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral and other masterpieces of old Moscow never fail to amaze guests. The Moscow Kremlin looks grand and impressive. Its architecture, interior and treasure collections make it a magnet for tourists from all over the world.

G. There is one memorable place most foreign tourists mention when they talk about their trip to the capital of Russia. That is the Moscow Metro. The most beautiful subway in the world is also very efficient. The metro lines are spread under the city like a huge web, which makes every destination easily accessible. The trains come to the stations every few minutes and bring millions of passengers every day. Most people prefer the metro to other means of transport.

  1. The floral diversity in the park
  2. In the heart of the big city
  3. Working hours and fees
  4. Flying in the sky
  5. The best season for visiting
  6. The history and the name of the place
  7. A cap and mittens may be needed
  8. Music fans are welcome too
A. A huge green place with an area of about 13 hectares appeared in the very centre of Moscow recently. Opened in 2017, Zaryadye Park is the newest park in the Russian capital. It is located next to the Moscow River, very close to Red Square, and, while spending their time in the park, visitors can enjoy a great view of the Kremlin. The park can be easily reached from the central metro stations and is already included in the main tourist routes round the centre of Moscow.

B. The newest design and engineering solutions were used to make the park look modern but also green and nature friendly. According to visitors, the most impressive thing in the park is the Floating Bridge. The bridge over the Moscow River is an elegant V-shape construction with very little support. It looks like it is floating in the air. Surprisingly, the bridge will not take you to the opposite side of the Moscow River. It goes from the left bank to the left bank, providing a high observation platform.

C. The park is built on a site with an interesting background. The first references to the area date to 12th century when it was inhabited mainly by craftsmen, traders and merchants. The area was close to the river, which at that time was an important trading route. A large cobbled street connected the river with the Kremlin and was used for delivering different goods there. People started to call the place Zaryadye in the 16th century because it was right behind the rows of market stalls on Red Square, which was the main market square at that time.

D. It is amazing that the urban park, which is in the centre of Moscow, contains four different climate zones. They are forest, steppe, tundra, and wetland or water meadows. The visitors can see the plants typical of each of the zones. All in all there are about 800 thousand species of trees, bushes and grass in the park. There is also a special garden for plants that prefer a much warmer climate than the climate in Russia. The garden has no walls - it is equipped with special warming panels, some of which are solar panels.

E. However, there is a place in Zaryadye park that cannot boast a large diversity of plants. It is the Ice Cave, where you can feel the atmosphere of the Arctic. Video projections, background sounds, along with tons of ice, create the impression of visiting the Far North. The pavilion actually focuses on this very topic – it tells the visitors about the flora, fauna, and the history of the Far North. With special equipment, the temperature in the cave is maintained at about 2–5 degrees below zero – some warm clothes are recommended!

F. The best architects and designers worked on the Zaryadye Park project and their combined efforts gave impressive results – all the buildings and constructions exist in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape. The Music Centre and the Amphitheatre are perfect examples of this. They are covered with a special glass coating, which lets the sunlight in and helps to maintain a comfortable temperature. Special technologies were applied to ensure the highest quality of sound there which makes the new performance venue one of the best in the country.

G. It is no wonder that Zaryadye Park is turning into one of the most popular and most visited attractions in Moscow. It is easy to get there by Metro from any place in the city. Visiting the park is free for everyone. In most cases, however, it is necessary to buy a ticket if you want to visit a museum or attend indoor events. The park is open to the public till 10pm every day. However, the entrance is closed one hour prior to the closing time.

B. Aptekarsky Ogorod tops the Moscow parks and gardens in popularity. And it is the oldest Botanical Garden in Russia. It was established in 1706 by Peter the Great and in 2018 it celebrated its 312th birthday. Aptekarsky Ogorod boasts its collection of really ancient plants – some palms and cycads are believed to be more than 200 years old. The glasshouses are a piece of historical heritage too! Some of them still have parts that date to the end of the 19th century.

C. Now Aptekarsky Ogorod is a large and very well-groomed green space. If you want to make the most of your visit, it is recommended to take a guided tour. Music lovers appreciate the unique classical music performances which are held in the tropical garden, among exotic palms, flowers and vines. The concerts are sometimes held at night time, which enhance the romantic atmosphere of the garden.

E. Originally, Moscow’s oldest botanical garden grew herbs and other medical plants. It belonged to the Moscow General Hospital and the herbs were used to make the medicine for the patients and to train the doctors and medical students in botany. In those times the doctors used herbs a lot to cure colds, infections, and all sorts of diseases. The local people started to call the place Aptekarsky Ogorod which means Pharmacy Garden.

F. Since 1805 till now, Aptekarsky Ogorod has belonged to Moscow State University as a part of its Botanical Garden. It provides the students of the Biology Faculty with a unique opportunity to study and experiment with a great diversity of plants from all over the world. Over the years, many famous researchers have worked there and have made new discoveries in botany, medicine and pharmacy.

G. According to some historic researchers, one of the trees in Aptekarsky Ogorod was planted by Emperor of Russia Peter the Great. In fact, some historians insist that Peter the Great planted three trees but only one of them is still living today. It is a large larch1 , which is about 250 years now. It is one of the landmarks of the garden and tourists never miss it!
